Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most before and after they start tracking their FIRE plan.

Getting started

What is FIRE?+
Financial Independence, Retire Early. The idea is to build up an investment portfolio large enough that a sustainable withdrawal rate covers your living expenses indefinitely, so working becomes optional rather than required.
What is Coast FIRE, and how does FirePath calculate it?+
Coast FIRE is the balance you'd need today, growing at a conservative long-run return with zero further contributions, to still hit your FIRE target by your actual target retirement age. FirePath calculates it from your real target retirement age and your Base Case return assumption — not your own recent portfolio performance — so the number doesn't quietly get easier to hit just because you had a lucky year.
Do I need to connect a brokerage account?+
No. FirePath doesn't connect to any broker or bank. You track your portfolio by entering your balance each month yourself, or by importing a spreadsheet.
Can I import my existing portfolio history?+
Yes — upload a CSV or Excel file on the Entries page with your period, balance, and invested columns, and FirePath walks you through matching them up before anything is saved.

Using FirePath

What currencies does FirePath support?+
Your portfolio's base currency can be EUR, USD, or GBP. Pro also supports holdings priced in other currencies, converted at a live exchange rate rather than just relabeled.
What return assumption does FirePath use for projections?+
You set four scenarios yourself — Bullish, Base Case, Bearish, and Conservative — in Settings, and every projection, the Tracker, and Coast FIRE all read from the same numbers. Nothing is hardcoded against your will; if a default doesn't match your own outlook, change it once and it updates everywhere.
Why does my progress look different from a simple "balance ÷ target" percentage?+
That raw percentage is still shown, but FirePath also tracks whether you're ahead of or behind the pace your plan actually needs — not just how much of the total you've reached. Someone one year into a 20-year plan and someone 19 years in can both be at the same simple percentage but in very different positions relative to their own timeline.

Plans & billing

What's the difference between Free and Pro?+
Free covers the core: 4-scenario projections, Coast FIRE, actual-vs-plan tracking, and the full dashboard — with a rolling 12-month view on history and 500 Monte Carlo simulations. Pro (€5.99/mo or €49.99/yr) unlocks full history, 5,000 simulations, allocation drift alerts, real multi-currency conversion, retirement drawdown modeling, and data export. See the full comparison.
Can I cancel anytime?+
Yes, cancel anytime, no questions asked — you keep Pro access until the end of the period you already paid for.
Is there a free trial?+
Free isn't a trial — it's a permanent tier with no time limit. You can use it for as long as you like and upgrade only if you want the Pro-only features.

Privacy & security

Is my financial data safe?+
Passwords are hashed with scrypt and never stored in plain text. Your session is a single signed cookie that can't be forged without our server-side secret, and login/signup are rate-limited against automated abuse. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
Can I delete my account and all my data?+
Yes, directly from Settings → Account → Delete account — no need to contact support. This permanently removes your profile, portfolio, entries, and holdings.
Do you sell my data or show ads?+
No. FirePath doesn't use tracking, advertising, or analytics cookies, and doesn't sell your data to anyone.
